in the 1950s in the japanese cinema, along with the famous toshiro mifune arises also another important actor of the samurai genre but with different style. this was refined, thin, feminoide. but in a striking personality: raizo ichikawa. he came out from kabuki theatre and became the rival of mifune without interacting with him ever because mifune was exclusivity of toho studios, while ichikawa was daiei's and tohei's interchangeably. his motion pictures weren't of the worldwide popularity of the mifune -due to the kurosawa's factor- but in japan became it a national hero. he made a series of 12 movies of an eccentric samurai called nemuri, a resentful sword expert, born of a geisha raped by a dutchman sailor. launched to fame the ninjas with the collection of shinobi films. acted in a dual role of shemale drag-queen and samurai, in benten kozo. and performed, among others, 3 masterpieces as kiru (meaning 'kill' but translated as destiny's son), ken ki (sword devil) and the epic dai satsujin (the betrayal) where takes place one of the most spectacular fighting of one against all in the samurai flick. and at the height of his fame at the age of 37, ichikawa suddenly dies and created a myth. there's a cult in his image and performance, with a mystery around his death. i have several movies of him and i present the final duel in the betrayal, great cinematography and choreography for that period (1966). the fact is that to forge the icon the film studios stated first that ichikawa had died of hepatic cirrhosis, by drinking. an image either according to his life both inside and outside of acting. but now his history is reviewed and rectified: he died of intestinal blockage. a not very honorable exhaust for a samurai. yet the wikipedia internet soften a little and ruled cancer of the rectum. anyway not died with sword in hand and sakè in blood. it was only a tough guy in virtual reality.
