THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA

esta es la tercera vez que visualizo en graficas el famoso cuento de hemingway, que le valiera el premio nobel y que es lo mejor que yo he leido, junto a rebelion en la granja de orwell, porque prefiero lo sinoptico y lo que diga mucho en pocas palabras. la primera vez lo hice en el 94, en una de las primeras computadoras que tuve, una mac del 93. y de hecho lo perdi cuando se me jodio el aparato. la segunda vez lo puse en mi blog (2009) y despues lo quite porque nunca me gusto del todo, me pegue mucho a la historia y no fue realmente una interpretacion mia. ahora hice lo mejor que pude por transmitir el sentimiento que me causo la obra de hemingway. y para ello lo lei en ingles, para interpretar al maximo a su creador. por eso lo escribi tal y como lo hizo el novelista, en ingles con palabras en español. aunque me tome la libertad de finalizarlo con una frase al estilo cubano. sobre el metodo grafico, partiendo de un programa de dibujo y otro de fotos, hice una mezcla de foto quemada sobre fondo de papel viejo con dibujos mios y elementos de archivos digitales, tales como los ojos, la luna, fibras y texturas. el pez es realmente un marlin, el que pusiera hemingway en su historia y que en cuba le llaman aguja porque difiere del pez espada o emperador, en su aleta dorsal. los tiburones del cuento fueron primero un mako, al que el pescador le llama dentuso tal y como lo hacen los pescadores en la isla y despues atacaron galanos, a los que tambien le llaman en la costa sur de cuba, cazones o tiburon verde; y en estados unidos, lemon shark. pero si bien use un mako legitimo en el primer tiburon; los galanos no resultan tan impactantes porque tienen un morro redondo y plano, por lo que use al tiburon blanco en lugar de ellos. el rostro del viejo es creado por mi y su cuerpo, cuando sale sin camisa para la batalla final, es el torso de bruce lee. finalmente, la cancion 'contigo en la distancia' es la que siempre imagine al visualizar la historia. y busque 2 versiones: la de jose feliciano y la de cristina aguilera. si bien la del puertorriqueño pega mas por el estilo caribeño y la guitarra, preferi la de la mejicana ecuatoriana porque es voz de mujer con variaciones de suave a gritos desgarradores... y quien le canta al viejo santiago, es el mar.

this is the third time that i visualize in graphics the famous story of hemingway, that worth the nobel prize and is the best thing that i've ever read, next to orwell's animal farm, because i prefer the synoptic and to say much with few words. the first time i did it in 94, with one of the first computers i had, a 93 mac. and in fact i lost it when the appliance cracked. the second time i put it on my blog (2009) and then remove it because i never liked at all, 'cause i stick too much to the story and it was not really my interpretation. now i did the best i could to convey the feeling that caused me the hemingway's work. and to do so, i read it in english, to interpret the most to its creator. that's why what i wrote it as the novelist did, in english with words in spanish. although i took the freedom to conclude it with a phrase in the cuban style. about the graph method, on the basis of a drawing and photos program, i did a mixture of burned photo on old paper background with my drawings and digital elements from files, such as the eyes, the moon, fibres and textures. the fish is a marlin, the same hemingway put in his tale and which in cuba is called aguja that is different from the swordfish or emperador due to the dorsal fin. the sharks of the story were first a mako, which the fisherman called dentuso as do the fishermen on the island and then attacked galanos, who also are called on the cuba south coast as cazones or green shark; and in united states, lemon shark. but while i used a legitimate mako in the first shark; the galanos aren't as shocking because they have a round and flat nose, for what i used the white shark instead. the face of the old man is created by me and his body, when he goes shirtless for the final battle, it's the bruce lee torso. finally, the song 'contigo en la distancia' (with you in the distance) as i always imagine when i view the story in my mind. and i look for 2 versions: jose feliciano's and cristina aguilera's. while that of the puerto rican sticks by caribbean style and the guitar, i prefer the mexican's ecuadoran's because it's woman's voice with variations from soft to heartbreaking cries... and who sings to the old santiago, is the sea.
