the amateur baseball 1970 world series, which was held in cartagena, colombia, from november 18 to december 4, was for me the most unforgettable after the of 1969 santo domingo's. with perhaps the best cuban team of all time, here are several things, the extraordinaries 2 games palyed by the american burt hooton and espirituano jose antonio huelga; and the most famous hidden ball trick from the matancero second base felix isasi. a synopsis brings the following: maganed by jack stallings u.s.a. team has 2 pitchers prepared for cuba. one is the left-handed richard troedson, with a terrific curve that later got him in the big leagues as san diego padres' starter; and the knuckleball's right-handed, burt hooton, who became star in the majors with a hit-not-not run and a world series with the los angeles dodgers. the americans are decided in the round-robin at last minute by hooton and defeated cuba 2x1 hitless (first the wrote a leg-single to wilfredo sanchez that the next day nullify it and loaded as error of the american short stop). the cuban left-handed santiago changa mederos lost the game even when he had a tremendous work also. that year, box-office and seeing the rivalry cuba-u.s.a. (it comes from the winnipeg67 pan american games where they face the great pitcher john curtis and dominican69, the left-handed larry osborne, who both always go to the big leagues with juicy contracts) then the 70 world series proposed a play-off between the first and second place for what cuba remains alive against u.s.a. to play 3 games, to win 2. in the first of the play-off hooton comes again and the cuban manager servio borges suddenly puts to star to jose antonio huelga (his star is changa mederos and thought about manolito hurtado, the best's pitcher repertoire). huelga was spectacular because it mimicked the wind-up of bob feller the big leagues monster, but his lack of control was famous due to its speed. even so the espirituano tide americans and become entangled in a duel with hooton, who comes to throw cuba 18 innings without hits. tied at 1 going to extra-innings to lose hooton 3x1 in the 11. is said that the american pitcher literally got tired when in the tenth hits a slam that wants to extend to triple exaggerating de running bases. to the following inning when he pitches, the cubans got 4 back to back hits even the decisive by huelga. defeated the invincible, the second play-off game is a drama of the press and nature. it's expected a duel of left-handers because americans put their trust in the braggart richard troedson which ensured that the play-off would be 2 games: hooton the first and he the second. the start is late until almost midnight due to the rain and when it starts, the 4 first cuban batters get based touching the ball, taking advantage of the mired ground (wilfredo, rosique, isasi and laffita) and then sarduy and mancebo batted-inn 3 runs in the same first mining. then in the middle of game the americans tie and put mederos in trouble with two bases and two outs and servio borges pulls out changa and brings manolito hurtado which can neither control and filled the bases. at that moment huelga, drunk, asks the ball to borges to do the impossible with less than 48 hours of rest after 11 innings pitched. huelga enters the mound and that is not only a psychological blow for the americans but is actually huelga is the only salvation (the rest of the cuban pitching roster: oscar romero, gaspar legon and emilio salgado not ate in that league. borges had decided only 6 pitchers to increase his batting, to includes capiro in the outfield). but huelga doesn't see a mule to 3 steps, according to him that confessed to me because we were childhood friend, neighbor of my grandmother in the plaza camejo -today hanoi- a few doors even to another baseball legend: modesto verdura. and then in a heavenly way it comes to save the game the famous hidden ball trick by second baseman felix isasi. with the cuban ivan davis as referee in second, just the american corridor is separated from the base isasi takes out the the ball from the glove and plays the out. starts the anger because the americans don't understand the play, come it illegal. the american maganer was even expelled from the game. with the american team playing under protest, huelga puts ice in the back of his head and returns to pitching and cuba wins game 5x3 and takes the championship home. fidel receives them at the airport, puts huelga the title of 'hero of cartagena', huelga confesses that he has a new born daughter and fidel put name to the daughter: 'victoria of cartagena' (whose name never accepts huelga wife, lourdes caro, and named her jacqueline) and in front of national television cameras the commandant turns to isasi and asks him about the hidden ball trick and he responds: 'well i ask huelga the ball, he gave me it, huelga poses as he is getting the sings of catcher lazarp perez and when i step by beside ivan davis and say to him that i have the ball'. the famous cuban referee stops isasi in the middle of the interview and tells: 'that was not necessary to tell me because our work is knowing where the ball is all the time'. but i wonder... -hey, it was hidden or was not hidden the ball?©varela
