la serie mundial de beisbol amateur de 1970 que se celebro en cartagena, colombia, del 18 de noviembre al 4 de diciembre, fue para mi la mas inolvidable despues de la de santo domingo en 1969. con quizas el mejor equipo cubano de todos lo tiempos, aqui pasan varias cosas, los extraordinarios 2 juegos lanzados por el norteamericano burt hooton y el espirituano jose antonio huelga; y la mas famosa jugada de
bola escondida del segunda base matancero felix isasi. una sinopsis trae lo siguiente: el equipo de u.s.a. dirigido por jack stallings lleva 2 lanzadores preparados para cuba. uno es el zurdo richard troedson, de una curva endemoniada que luego fuera el abridor de los padres de san diego en las grandes ligas; y el derecho de la knuckleball, burt hooton, que llegara a ser astro de las mayores con un not hit no run y una serie mundial con los dodgers de los angeles. en la ronda regular (round-robin) los americanos se deciden a ultima hora por hooton y derrota a cuba 2x1 sin hits (primero le apuntan un sencillo de piernas a wilfredo sanchez que al dia siguiente le anulan y lo cargan como error del short stop americano). el juego lo pierde el zurdo santiago changa mederos que lanza tremenda bola tambien. ese año, por taquilla y viendo la rivalidad cuba-u.s.a. (viene desde los juegos panamericanos de winnipeg67 donde se enfrentan al gran pitcher john curtis y en dominicana69, al zurdo larry osborne, que siempre pasan a las grandes ligas con contratos jugosos) entonces para el mundial del 70 se propone un play-off entre el primer y el segundo lugar por lo que cuba queda viva contra u.s.a., a jugar 3 juegos, para ganar 2. en el primero del play-off viene hooton otra vez y el manager cubano servio borges sorpresivamente pone de abridor a jose antonio huelga (su estrella es changa mederos y se pensaba en manolito hurtado, el lanzador de mejor repertorio). huelga era espectacular lanzado porque imitaba el wind-up de bob feller el monstruo de las grandes ligas, pero su descontrol era famoso debido a su velocidad. aun asi el espirituano marea a los americanos y se enreda en duelo con hooton, que le llega a lanzar a cuba 18 innings sin hits. empatados a 1 van a extra-innings para perder hooton en el onceno 3x1. se dice que el lanzador americano literalmente se cansa al pegar en el decimo un batazo que quiere extender a triple exagerando el corrido de bases. a la entrada siguiente cuando le toca lanzar, los cubanos le pegan 4 hits seguidos incluso uno decisivo del mismo huelga. vencido el invencible, el segundo juego del play-off es un drama de la prensa y la naturaleza. se espera un duelo de zurdos porque los americanos depositan su confianza en el fanfarron richard troedson que aseguraba que el play-off serian 2 juegos: hooton el primero y el, el segundo. el inicio se atrasa hasta casi la medianoche debido a la lluvia y cuando empieza, los 4 primeros bateadores cubanos se embasan tocando la bola aprovechando el terreno enfangado (wilfredo, rosique, isasi y laffita) y alli mismo sarduy y mancebo empujan 3 carreras en el mismo primer ining. entonces a mediados de juego los americanos empatan y le ponen la cosa mala a mederos con 2 en bases y 2 outs y servio borges saca a changa y trae a manolito hurtado que tampoco puede controlar y llena las bases. en ese momento huelga, borracho, le pide la bola a borges para hacer lo imposible con menos de 48 horas de descanso tras 11 entradas lanzadas. huelga entra al monticulo y aquello no solo es un golpe psicologico para los americanos sino que en realidad huelga es la unica salvacion (el resto del roster cubano de pitcheo: oscar romero, gaspar legon y emilio salgado no comian en esa liga. borges habia llevado solo 6 lanzadores para aumentar su bateo, incluyendo a capiro en los jardines). pero huelga no ve una mula a 3 pasos, segun me confesara despues pues era amigo de infancia, vecino de mi abuela en la plazoleta camejo -hoy hanoi- a pocas puertas incluso de otra leyenda del beisbol: modesto verdura. y entonces de manera celestial lo viene a salvar la famosa jugada de la bola escondida de felix isasi. con el cubano ivan davis de arbitro en segunda, apenas el corredor americano se separa de la base isasi saca la bola del guante y le coge el out. se forma la bronca porque los americanos no entienden la jugada, la ven ilegal. incluso botan del terreno al manager de estados unidos. con el equipo americano jugando bajo protesta, huelga se pone hielo en el cogote y regresa a lanzar y cuba gana el juego 5x3 y se lleva el campenato mundial a casa. fidel los recibe en el aeropuerto, le pone a huelga el titulo de 'heroe de cartagena', huelga le confiesa que acaba se nacer su hija y fidel le pone nombre tambien a la hija: 'victoria de cartagena' (cuyo nombre nunca lo acepta la mujer de huelga, lourdes caro, y la nombra jacqueline) y frente a las camaras de la television nacional el comandante se vira y le pregunta a isasi por la bola escondida y este le responde:
'bueno yo le pido la bola a huelga, me la da, huelga se hace el que esta cogiendo las señas de lazaro perez y yo paso por al lado de ivan davis y le digo que tengo la bola'. el famoso arbitro cubano ataja a isasi en medio de la entrevista y le dice:
'que no tenia que decirmelo porque nuestro trabajo es saber donde esta la bola todo el tiempo'. pero yo pregunto... -bueno, era escondida o no era escondida la bola?
