we are in december 1957 in havana and 2 black slum girls fight over a boyfriend. one gives a few clefts to the other with a machete. the news, as normal, comes out in the bohemia's sensationalist page and 'la guantanamera' radio show as the aggressor is the daughter of a lieutenant of the batista police and the victim usually defend the movement july 26, carlos franqui sees the hook and tells fidel castro. radio rebelde from the sierra maestra denounces the aggression as an example over the dictatorship's barbarism. the case goes beyond the new york times by the sympathy that the fidel's struggle is lifting on the american people as well as towards the batistiano government's increasing aversion. the mulata bandaged face appears on the life magazine's cover with this headline: 'disfigurement of the face of a nation'. an international campaign is made to pay for her plastic surgery in a california clinic. as the girl is called berenice is created the 'berenice' brigades of female niggas in harlem and the 'berenice' battalion of rebel women in the cuban mountains; and as the fanshion in the 50s, all babies females that are born are named berenice. it begins to sell allan poe's tale 'berenice', and hollywood releases 'berenice' with sidney poitier and harry belafonte. such is the impact that the state department calls back its ambassador in cuba and suspends batista's military aid and tells him has to go. batista flees a year before what fled in the real story. i'm not saying a fact so decants a revolution but when sensationalism is politicized is a weapon more and creates historical juncture. so happened with the priest jerzy popieluszko in poland and the dissident pastor laszlo tokes in romania. both cases, murder and deportation, created so much unpopularity to their communist regimes that precipitated both to the fall one way or another. then now same thing happens in cuba but upside-down. yet the cuban government -which is now the dictatorship- can be happy because the news doesn't penetrate the big american media, for whatever reason, trivial or hyped dragged by the hair. but the cuban officials produced a childish video to detract the miami version. that's only denotes fear. i remember when the case of general ochoa -by fear- was banned to mention spain in the drugs -which was involved- and then instead of spain was said europe. at one point during the choreographed trial, declares the inmate tony de la guardia, and by a lapsus mentis gaps the libretto: 'we call our contacts in spa... in europe.' that small grammar bug escaped censorship. the same way now in this video (perhaps will be edited) the aggressor's mother-in-law says (minute 1:54): ' we are presenting here by itself at our own decision... we were cited, called... or we were simply called.' for most this means that complying with a subpoena or a call from the authorities is not available to own decision. finally, both press are equal, the havana's and miami's: so awkward.©varela
