in the early 1960s, not without many protests of the merchants of the area that wanted to raise in the cove of the bay a hotel for casinos, began the construction of the building of the miami herald, which opened in 1963. in 1975 exits its spanish supplement, 'el miami herald', with translations of news and columns from the english-language newspaper. 1976 ramon mestre, the son of a cuban political prisoner, chains to the bars around the building, protesting the lack of coverage of a massacre of prisoners in the prison of boniato in cuba. a few years later the newspaper hires mestre in its editorial board in english. in 1987 the cuban miami tv and the radio accuse the spanish herald of passivity and servility with the cuban regime and begin a boycott of its distribution, break consignors and cuban supermarkets refuse to sell the newspaper in their establishments. the supplement hires new staff, redesigns the pages and changes the title to 'el nuevo herald'. in january of 1992 jorge mas canosa, that had nicknamed the newspaper building as 'the monster of the bay', begins a campaign against it with ads throughout the city, in english and spanish: i don't believe in the miami herald. so the millionaire anti-castrista leader buys 30 outdoor billboards throughout the city and signs in 60 buses of the public transport system. the vandals acts against the metal newspapers stands, included excrement, chewing gums in coins slots and graffiti of 'communist'. during the 1990s the spanish supplement is torn between 2 diametrically opposite endeavours: to please the local extreme right and obtain permission from the cuban government to open an office in havana. in 1998 the supplement hires a new director who re-design the pages again, imposes a new staff, folds to the miami right-wing and gives a sensational twist to the press. with pompous first page headlines: 'embarrassment!' (about the rafters persecution by the coast guards) and 'save us lord!' (with the arrival of a hurricane in florida). the new director died in 2002 of a syncope while vacationing and assistant director -his sex partner-, succeed him and allows the hiring of journalists and editors of the newspaper by radio and tv marti, governmental institutions, resulting in a conflict of interest and an attack on the ethics of journalism. in july 2005 county commissioner arthur teele, leader of the black community, in the middle of an investigation about his finances and private life, enters the lobby, communicates with the journalist jim defede and a shot himself. the afro-american community reacts against the institution and this sacrifice to jim defede, as had recorded the voice of teele without permission. in september 2006 breaks out the scandal of the spanish supplement about the cuban journalists who were paid from the american government in radio and tv marti. in november, by a personal problem with the director i take the spanish supplement newsroom for 4 hours, i piss in the armchair of the director office and proceed to declare to the press and the political leaders by phone that the director has a convicted sexual predator as editorial chief (personal friend of him), as the main responsible for the conflict of interests of employees with the american government payments and must resign (for this cause only had waived the publisher). and by the way i also asked the resignation of the director of the english-language newspaper, who has called the cubans 'chihuahuas puppies' or otherwise i burn the newsroom. after 45 minutes of negotiation the s.w.a.t. goes up to arrest me and i was sentenced to 2 years probation. the english director resigns 15 days later and the spanish's was removed it when i completed my probation. in 2011 a casinos company buys the building grounds. and now in 2012 after several negotiations at city hall with historic conservationists who wanted to preserve the building, decided to demolish it to build a hotel with casinos.©varela
