en 1959 cuando llego la revolucion cubana habia unos 18 mil judios censados. en 1985, el ultimo conteo serio de la comunidad hebrea cubana, arrojo no mas de 850 judios. de cuba se desaparecio el 95% de los judios en 25 años. que les paso a los judios en esa isla del caribe? los gasearon? para que se entienda la dimension de esto dire que en 1933 cuando el tercer reich llego al poder en alemania habia 500 mil judios. en el proximo censo, 1950, habia 35 mil. en 17 años se desaparecieron de alemania 465 mil judios: el 93%. es decir, no lo digo yo, lo dicen las estadisticas: fidel castro fue peor que adolfo hitler para los judios en cuanto a espantarlos del territorio nacional. pero veamos la historia, a ver si es un problema de antisemitismo. porque cuba no los trajo a la fuerza como esclavos, los judios fueron los que llegaron por una vida mejor. el primer judio en pisar tierra cubana fue el español luis de torres, un marinero de huelva que se apeo de la niña con los hermanos pinzones. despues, la unica gobernadora de cuba, doña isabel de bobadilla, fue judia convertida, no de nacimiento. el primer judio que comenzo el holocausto judeo-cubano fue francisco salomon gomez de leon, preso y ejecutado en la habana a principios de 1600 por sus convicciones religiosas bajo la influencia de la santa inquisicion española sobre la primera comunidad de marranos o judios conversos. despues comenzaron a llegar hebreos de todas partes. se estima que unos 500 judios participaron en los conflictos de independencia de cuba del lado de los mambises. y judios-americanos comenzaron a establecerse en la isla como negociantes o veteranos de la guerra hispano-americana, una vez terminada. cabildeando para conseguir visados y permisos de entrada, en 1904 se fundo en cuba la united hebrew congregation con una sinagoga reformista y en 1906 compraron su primer cementerio. abrieron una biblioteca yiddish, una escuela nocturna de idiomas, una primaria para niños hebreos y un grupo de teatro. al llegar los judios ortodoxos establecieron el adath israel en 1925. el kultur fareyn fundo la union izquierdista judia en 1926 e inmediatamente comenzaron los encontronazos entre ellos por motivos politicos. dentro del ala izquierda se creo la asociacion femenina froein farein en 1927 que ayudaba a las mujeres judias con trabajos, dinero y un circulo infantil para cuidarles los hijos mientras ellas trabajaban. entonces en 1929 cuando llegaron los sionistas y fundaron la union sionista de cuba enseguida se convirtieron en la fuerza judia mas importante tanto politica como economica. en 1940 la union sionista tenia varios partidos que si bien no ganaban escaños en la camara de representantes cubana, usaban su influencia en las elecciones nacionales, provinciales y municipales. pero se puede decir que hasta la decada del 40 el 90% de los judios cubanos vivian en niveles de pobreza, austeridad y dieta magra comparados con la clase media nacional. eran esquinados por la aristocracia criolla, ostentosa y racista. les decian 'turcos' y 'polacos' con desprecio y la jerga popular los tildaba de tacaños y mal vestidos. aunque no hubo muestras relevantes de antisemitismo en cuba, las victimas directas de esta tendencia al desprecio fueron 907 refugiados judios quienes atracaron en cuba el 15 de mayo de 1939 a bordo del trasatlantico saint louis y los obligaron a regresar a alemania. casi todos murieron luego en los campos de concentracion nazis. tras ese incidente los judios en cuba se reorganizaron alrededor del grupo mas fuerte: los sionistas. en 1947 el gobierno cubano -sin contar con los grupos sinonistas- voto contra la division de palestina, lo cual obstruia la creacion del estado de israel. los sionistas comenzaron una escalada de acciones politicas y embargos economicos nacionales que termino con el reconocimiento inmediato de cuba al estado de israel cuando se fundo en 1948 siendo uno de los primeros paises en establecer relaciones diplomaticas con el gobierno del medinat yisrael. en 1959 al llegar fidel castro al poder comenzaron a irse los judios mas ricos. pero la ola migratoria mayor ocurrio en 1967, tras la guerra de los 6 dias donde israel se cogio las alturas de golan al norte, el west bank al este y la peninsula del sinai al sur, cuba se adhirio al discurso sovietico (aliado natural de los arabes) apoyando a egipto, a siria y a jordania. la expansion territorial contra el mundo arabe se trato como 'sionismo' y el gobierno cubano convirtio la palabra en sinonimo de 'imperialismo' aun cuando en los conflictos armados de israel, estados unidos no siempre ha sido su aliado. y en 1973 durante la guerra del yon kippur, cuando cuba envio tropas y consejeros militares a siria, se largaron practicamente todos los judios. actualmente se estima que la comunidad judia en cuba tiene unos 1,500 miembros. es decir, si bien se diezmo en el primer cuarto de siglo de la revolucion cubana, en los segundos 25 años ha duplicado su escasa poblacion. es nueva politica de acercamiento del gobierno a la nacion hebrea pero no por otra cosa que por sobrevivir como gobierno pues esta claro que a los jerarcas cubanos les importa un bledo que los judios sobrevivan como pueblo. nada justifica la desaparacion de un pueblo de un sitio del planeta motivada por el hombre.
