the oscar nominations are out there and it does not surprise me that the theme of the southern nigga has 17 nominations (12 lincoln and 5 django unchained). we're in the obama's second cycle. the one from steven spielberg is a dullness with too much silly patriotism and tedious political drama. and the one from tarantino is bad copycat. already the genius of the violent colloquy showed his love to the cowboy genre (mostly spaghetti's) with his black humor comedy inglourious basterds pushing original music from 60s classics plus a scene totally plagiarized from once upon to time in the west. now it appeared with a theme that looks stolen from the spike lee's agenda and the 70s revolutionary ethnic cinema when the indian and the nigga became good ones in the western and sidney portier and harry belafonte were killing white villains as cameron mitchell (buck & the preacher, 1972). the formula is repeated: leonardo dicaprio is the vile laden and jamie foxx the obama. even the austrian christoph waltz that already took an oscar for the role of the very bad nazi in inglourious basterds, is nominated again for his role as a german in the u.s. south as a copy of the pasta's baron von schulenberg in the famous big gundown (1966). but the film is inspired by the sergio corbucci's 1966 django with franco nero, in matters erotic and social the 1975's mandingo on southern slavery and the cold whiteness of the great silence of 1968, one of the epic westerns not produced in united states, completely filmed in a snowy landscape of corbucci with ennio morricone's music and mute performance by the french jean-louis trintignant in the only film where the bad one kills the good one in the showdown. and this year apparently spielberg and tarantino have a duel like that. hollywood became southern... and dark.©varela
